The specialists believe that eighty percent of our energy is misused in thoughts that are absolutely not necessary. If we channelize these thoughts by calming the mind and focusing in the right direction, then we can be benefited immensely. The removal of these unwanted thoughts will ensure that we move towards more peace and calm our minds.
Technique
- Choose a serene and peaceful environment and stick a white paper on the wall which has black point on the centre of it. The paper should be stick to the appropriate height so that when you start looking it your head should be straight.
- Sit in lotus posture, if you are not comfortable then you can use a floor chair, but make sure to keep your spine erect and paper should be arm’s length away from you.
- Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths till you feel completely relaxed.
- Open the eyes and start gazing at the black dot without blinking.
- Do not blink your eyes, your mind will wander every now and then, and when that happens just gently bring your focus back without fighting with your thoughts or getting involved in thinking. While gazing continuously tears will come from your eyes, but don’t close your eyes.
- Continue for about 5-10 minutes initially, however gradually you can increase the time duration of this process.
- Splash cold water on your eyes after the practice.
Benefits
Purifies the eyes, strengthens the eye muscles, and improves vision and memory. Helps with sleeping difficulties and bedwetting. Strengthens the ability to concentrate and is therefore recommended for school children. Develops intuition, the ability to visualize, and willpower.
Caution
This exercise is not suitable for people with psychic problems. Those who have a tendency towards Schizophrenia or hallucinations should not practice Trataka.
